All Eyes and ear on Latinos

The National Hispanic Media Coalition wanted to asses hoe people around the world view Hispanic be due to their media portrayals. They surveyed non-Latinos about their news and media content and their opinions on Latinos.  They did another survey on Latino viewers and their perception of Latinos. The media stereotypes have cast a negative light ton Latinos.

The surveys showed that the things people believe to be true about Latinos steam from the media and are usually negative. Non-Latino views on Latinos all depend on what channel they watch.  Conservative talk radios such as Fox News cast negative lights on Latinos, which leads to more negative opinions on Latinos.  Even the people that want to have an open mind about Latinos are prone to cast a negative light on this nationality because of negative entertainment or news media narratives.

“Negative portrayals of Latinos and immigrants are pervasive in news and entertainment media. Consequently, non-Latinos commonly believe many negative stereotypes about these groups are true.”

“Specifically, non-Latinos report seeing Latinos in stereotypically negative or subordinate roles (gardeners, maids, dropouts, and criminals) most often in television and film.”

Although I do believe that the false and negative portrayal of Hispanics needs to decrease to a minimum on fake film and television shows, it should stop on talk shows. Truth of the matter is that people believe what they hear, and they believe what they hear even more son on a realistic show. The negative view that Hispanics are getting should not be coming from the fake media, let alone talk shows. Categorizing nationalities into good or bad is false and rude.

The fact that peoples views are stronger when Latinos are portrayed on television rather than film didn’t make sense to me at first but after I gave it some thought I understood why. Seeing a Hispanic antagonist on one movie is detrimental to the nationality is not as impacting as seeing the same Hispanic person perform despicable acts throughout a show.

Since shows have more of an impact, maybe negative Hispanic views should be limited on television should be limited while positive ones are encouraged. This way, the media industry will work to improve Latinos collective image.
